Situated in the northwest part of Kaifeng city, Yanqingguan Daosim Temple has a long history of over 800 years. This temple was built to commemorate Wangchongyang, who was the founder of Quanzhenjiao, which was actually a sect of Daosim and the theories and scriptures of which combined thoughts of Buddihsm, Daosiom and Confucious together. Wangchongyang was born in the year 1112 and died in 1170. He was living in a time when there were wars everywhere in China and many people lived in abject poverty and a very miserable life. He then founded Quanzhenjiao, a religion which proclaimed equality between religions. In 1170 he died in Kaifeng just in this area, as a result his disciples began to build a temple here to commemorate this great master.

The temple was first built at the end of Northern Song Dynasty in the 12th century AD and then has been rebuilt or renovated for several times. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, it was largely repaired and renovated by the local government for several times.

Nowadays the temple is mainly composed of Jade Emperor Tower, Sanqing Palace and some annex halls, of which the most famous part is the Jade Emperor Tower, which was first built in 1373 in the Ming dynasty and after that had been rebuilt. Inside of this building the statue of the Jade Emperor was displayed for people to worship. This is a very traditional Daoism architecture with peculiar designs as well as bright colors.

Generally speaking, this temple is a good place for those who are interested in Chinese Daoism culture.
