The church on the Garden Road is the first Christian church built in Hong Kong and called the Cathedral by local people. Its current appearance is mainly preserved from the expansion program in 1865. During the Second World War, it served as a headquarter for the Japan army.

Though it was rebuilt for many times after the Second World War, the original appearance has been preserved. A monument standing in the front gate is to commemorate the martyrs in the First World War.

Maxwell tombstones lying are dedicated to memorizing the soldiers who died in front of the Cathedral during Hong Kong's Defensive War. Another gravestone for William Senior Captain is on the northern wall of the Cathedral to commemorate the captain who became a martyr in Guangzhou in 1857. At present, the Cathedral is the main Community Church for Hong Kong and Macau.

The church had brightly colored the colony's landscape when it erected in 1849 but is lost in the forest of high rises around it at present.
