In the sixteenth year of Guangxu period of Qing dynasty (A.D.1890), in order to build Luzhou- Wuhan Railway, Zhang Zhidong, The governor of Hubei and Guangdong provinces, founded Hanyang iron plant. In 1908, Hanyeping Coal and Iron Mine and Plant Ltd (also called Hanyeping Company in general) was established based on Hanyang Iron Plant, Daye Iron Plant, and Peng Xian g Coal Mine. Integrating exploring, smelting, and selling, it was the first and most large-scaled Chinese steel, iron and coal joint enterprise which used new mechanical equipment to conduct mass production. According to the Annals of Hanyeping Company, in a period before 1915, the steel output of the company occupied 100% of national steel output. Until it stopped producing in 1948, the company had almost experienced the whole process of the modern Chinese capitalism development which covers 3 periods of government running, businessman running under government’s supervision, and businessman running. There is no exaggeration to call it the epitome of the development of modern iron and steel industry in China.

In the old site of Hanyeping Iron and Coal Mine and Plant ,there still integratedly preserved a loading pier of furnace, an iron smelting furnace, 4 residences of Japanese style, one of European style, a watchtower and an mineral unload machine. The smelting furnace is the oldest relic of iron and steel smelting spot of the modern industry period preserved in China, which is of important historical value. The architectural complex of Japanese and European style is an important witness of the historical progress of the company. It is not only of important historical value, it also enjoys high status in Chinese architectural history for its unique structure on the architectural perspective.
