It is a local comprehensive museum. It is famous at home and abroad for its historical relics with unique local characters and its archeological researches. 

There are 120,000 museum pieces here, among which first-class one are over 200. There are 4 exhibition zones in its displaying building: “the exhibition of primitive culture in Jianghan Plain”, “the exhibition of Chu Culture in Jianghan Plain”, “ the exhibition of the choicest relics” and “the exhibition of the characters carved in pieces of bamboo which were excavated in Jinzhou”. In the hall of treasures, there is the exhibition of No.168 tomb in the Han Dynasty excavated in Phoenix Mountain, the exhibition of lacquer wares in ancient China and the exhibition of embroideries made in the Chu and Han Dynasties; the area for exhibition is over 4,000 square kilometers and around 3,000 precious relics are exhibited here. There are some national relics, such as, silks made in the period of Warring States, sword of the king of Yue country, a weapon (mao) used by the king of Wu country-Fuchai, lacquer wares in the Qin and Han Dynasties, characters carved in bamboo pieces in the first years of the Han Dynasty and a well preserved male corpse of Han Dynasty.
