The Site of Zoumaling

The center is an irregular rectangle ancient city site in one plane, the largest length is 370 meters from the east to the west and the largest width is 300 meters from the south to the north. The city walls were built with white clays, brown clays and yellow clays from the top down. There was a city gate in the middle of the east city wall and another two gates in the ends of the west city wall. The large houses over 100 square meters, the middle houses with several rooms and occupying areas from 30 square meters to 50 square meters and the small only 8 square meters houses are all found in the city. Fragments of broken pottery of early Qujialing Culture were found in the city walls and were buried under ash cellars and graves of later Qujialing Culture, so we can draw the conclusion that the city was built in the early period of Qiujialing Culture. The discovery of the site of Zoumaling provides physical data to research the early sites and the funerary system in the middle reach of Changjiang River.
