Baoping Village is a nice place with beautiful scenery. One of limpid branches of The Yangtze River, named Fragrant Brook, goes through the village. The west part of the brook surrounds a green hill, with a natural flat land in the mountainside, where that village locates, thus it got the name "Baoping" (valuable level land). In the village gate of Baoping is a platform made of earth, on which a moon door is engraved with three characters "Shu Zhuang Tai" ("dressing table" in English). It is said that it was the place for Zhaojun to dress and make up in the past. The platform, covered with shade, got some stone tables and stools under it for visitors to rest.
Walking about 10 steps from the dressing table, you can get to the dwelling of Wang Zhaojun, which was rebuilt according to the ancient picture. It has tall wall and big yard, with a palatial gate tower. Getting into the house, you can find encircled and sinuous corridor. The flower terrace in the yard has hundreds of flowers blossoming luxuriantly, with a 3-meter-high figure of Wang Zhaojun made of white marble standing in it. This is a present to the "Maternal Home" of Zhaojun by Huhhot of Inner Mongolia.
Getting out of it walking for over a hundred steps to the east, you can get to "Nan-mao Well", which is the place for Zhaojun to get water. The well is about one meter deep, clear enough to see bottom. The well water has never dried up and there is a nan-mao sunk on the bottom of the well.
Legends
Wang Zhanjun was one of the four most beautiful ladies in ancient China. Many interesting stories related to this real beauty spread around the areas. Two of the famous stories are as follows:
1. One day, Zhaojun was bathing in the brook when she lost a pearl in the water carelessly, and from then on the brook became very limpid and transparent, full of fragrance, thus got the name "Fragrant Brook".
2. It is said that before Wang Zhaojun went out of the front pass, Chinese Yuan emperor specially permitted her to return to home village to visit her parents. When the time for visiting relatives expired, she said goodbye to them. At that time, it was in March when the peach blossom was in full bloom season. She got out of Fragrant Brook by boat, knowing that she could not come back again, so she was unable to restrain to weep copiously and her tears fell into the brook, which combined with the falling flowers on the surface of the water and changed into the minnow.
