Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located to the north of Tianshan Mountain range. As its name in Mongolian indicates, Urumqi was once a beautiful pasture but today it is a bustling city filled with skyscrapers and congested highways. Steady economic development has totally changed the city's appearance.

So important city in the Modern Silk Road!

Xinjiang is very big and sprawling and the city itself is not interesting at all. Most travelers use it as a important stopover from where they can make all the neccessary preparation for trips throughout the region along the Silk Road.
