Chongtiangong Palace, called Zhishan (means the hill of management) in old days, lies on Yeshan Hill in the southwest of Nanjing .  It is said that, because Fu Chai, the emperor of Wu State the Spring and Autumn Period, used to cast swords here, the later emperors built their temples and palaces in this place. The Chongtiangong was named by Taizu Zhuyuan Zhang in the Ming Dynasty, which contains the meaning of worshiping the Son of Heaven. At that time, the nobility worshiped their ancestors in this palace. At the end of Qing, the Chongtiangong Palace was reconstructed as Jiangning, which was once used as a school for privileged children.

The Chongtiangong Palace is said to be the largest and most well-preserved group of ancient buildings in the south of Yangtze River .  The present structures, based on a grand scale at the end of the Qing Dynasty, are built symmetrically on either side of the axis. The Chongtiangong Palace is now transformed into the Municipal Museum but it was formerly an imperial palace in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).In imperial times and Ming dynasty court life were conducted daily at the palace square, completed with eunuchs, courtiers, guards and dancing girls. And now large-sized performances of ancient music and ceremony of worshiping Tianzi are reenacted as an attraction in the Chongtiangong every day.
