Ling Gu Temple also known as Ling Gu Monastery was built during the Liang Dynasty in 514. It was moved to its current location in 1381 during the Ming Dynasty at the request of Emporer Zhu Yan Zhang. Located in Nanjing , it is situated about one and a half kilometers east of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum and is said to be “the best Buddhist temple in the world”. Ling Gu was once a large monastic complex where 1,000 Buddhist monks could study at a time. Many people came to visit lighting joss sticks or sweet incense to give tribute.

Ling Gu is surrounded by high banks and deep valleys (gu) of thick forest and blooming flowers. The sweet fragrance and the sound of the temple bell in the distance give this area a very peaceful feeling.

One of the most significant features of the temple is the Beamless Hall. Its vaulted ceiling is constructed completely of brick with no supporting beams or pillars; no wood or nails were used. The craftsmanship is awe inspiring as it is the largest and oldest brick structure in China even today.

Another unique feature of Ling Gu Temple is the famous Shensong House restaurant located east of the Songlin Pavillion. Keeping with the 600 year tradition of a strictly vegetarian diet, the menu is carefully chosen with only the best ingredients. With wonderful aromas and beautiful presentation of the dishes a visit to the Ling Gu Temple and Shensong House restaurant are well worth it.
