Located on the banks of the Yangtze River, Yangzhou emerged as a cosmopolitan destination during the spring and autumn periods between 770-476 B.C. when King Fu Chai erected a defense system for the Wu state. Eventually, the city grew into a large, densely populated, culturally and scenically rich city. Formerly known as Kuang-ling, the original city was founded in the 4th century BC and located east of the present site. In 590 AD, Kuang-ling becameYangzhou after the traditional name of the entire southeastern part of China. Then, in the 7th century, Yangzhou became the chief commercial city of the Yangtze area due to its importance as a canal port, seaport, and administrative center.
