Brief Introduction of the City

Zhenjiang City is located in the southwest of Jiangsu Province and along the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It adjoins Changzhou City in the southeast, neighbors Nanjing City in the west, and faces Yangzhou City and Taizhou City across the river. The Yangtze River and the Jing-Hang Grand Canal intersects here. Zhengjiang City now exercises jurisdiction over three cities, one county and two districts (namely, Danyang City, Yangzhong City, Jurong City, Dantu County, Jingkou District, Runzhou District). It is a medium-sized city in the economic development and open belt along the Yangtze River Delta which blends harbor, industry, trade and tourism into one. The whole city covers a total land area of 3847 square meters, of which the urban areas cover an area of 1082 square meters. In terms of topography, Zhenjiang City is high in the west and low in the east as well as high in the south and low in the north. It has rolling mountains. The landform is featured by centering on foothills and mound land. Of them, the Ningzhen Range generally extends from the east to the west while the Maoshan Range extends slightly from the north to the south.

At the end of 2004, the whole city has a total registered population of 2,672,100, of which the urban areas has a population of 1,013,600.

Zhenjiang City is located at the cross intersection of Huning industrial belt, the Yangtze River, and the canal. It possesses the advantageous conditions of harbor, traffic, energy sources, water conservancy, land use and city support, etc, which are essential in developing foundation industry. Zhenjiang has been an important commodity distribution center with developed market and trade circulation in the north and south of the Yangtze River all through the ages. Zhenjiang is developed in economy with important pillar cornerstone industries of electronics, paper making, chemistry, mechanics and building materials.

Zhenjiang is close to the river and the sea. Therefore, it has very convenient water and land traffic. It is a key junction of the national-level waterway and a key junction city of the provincial-level highway as well. The Huning highway, Jinghu railway and Huning second-class highway run through the city. It has a modernized communication system. The Zhenjiang Harbor is one of the key junction harbors all over the country. It has a coastline of 259 kilometers along the Yangtze River, of which the deep water coastline is 85 kilometers long. Zhenjiang is a national first-class open port and has first-class universities and scientific research institutions such as Jiangsu University, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology and China Silkworm Research Institute. In 1978, Zhenjiang was included into the open cities by the State Department. In 1986, it was ranked as the national well-known historic and cultural city by the State Department; in 1988, it was ranked as a coastal economic open zone by the State Department.
