As a natural pass connecting Jiangxi province and Guangdong province, the 440 meters high Mei Pass forms the boundary between the provinces of Jiangxi and Guangdong. Convenient to guard against and hard to attack, the steep pass has always been contended by military forces in history. In ancient times, as the only route from south to north or vice versa, it was well-known as the “Majestic Pass of Nanyue” or “First Pass of Lingnan” (Both Nanyue and Lingnan are alternative names for Guangdong.)。Built during the Kaiyuan period of Tang Dynasty (713—741), the Mei Pass used to be an important thoroughfare crowded with businessmen trading goods in endless quantities. It is also well-known for it connects the inner land with the “Maritime Silk Road ” starting from the costal areas. The still remaining history vestiges on Mei Pass are: the wide way for ten wagons at the same time, the Building of Mei Pass, Jieling Bridge,Guangda Bridge, Wangmei Pavilion, Banshan Station,Hongmei Spread, Ancient Courier Station, An Wharf and some engraved stone tablets. The “Red Plum-flowers of Gengling Mount” of the Mei Pass, also known as “Park of Red Plum-flowers”, is widely renowned for the special phenomenon that when flowers facing south are withering, the flowers facing north have just begun blossoming.
