Jiangxi got its name for its locating in the western of South China. In Tang dynasty, Jiangxi was part of the South China province. Later, Jiangxi was separated as a province. However, in Song dynasty, it changed its name as Jiang Nan Xi Lu. It was divided into two provinces in Yuan dynasty. In Ming dynasty, the two provinces were united as a province and it was called Jiangxi province, but later it was renamed as Jiangxi administrative region. Jiangxi got its present name form Qing dynasty.
