Jiaozuo Overview

Location: Jiaozuo is located in the northwest of Henan Province, which borders on Shanxi Province to the north, Jiyuan City to the west and Xinxiang City to the east.

Best Time to Visit: The best periods to visit Jiaozuo are summer and autumn. From May to October each year, the Yuntai waterfall and red rock gorge boasts marvelous landscapes due to the sufficient water yield.


Known as the birthplace of Chinese Taijiquan, Jiaozuo City is home to Chinese martial arts, which is popular, noticeable and of world’s concern. With a long historical standing, Jiaozuo has been considered as the birthplace of Chinese civilization since ancient times. There were human footprints in Jiaozuo as early as 8,000 years ago. Due to the favorable geographical location and thousands of years of historical and cultural accumulation, Jiaozuo features abundant and peculiar natural and human landscapes. For instance, the famous Yuntaishan World Geopark which consists of Yuntaishan national-level scenic area, Qinglong Gorge, Fenglin Gorge, Mount Shennong and Qingtianhe Scenic Area is one of the world’s first batch of Geoparks confirmed by the united nations educational scientific and cultural organization.

According to record, there are altogether 60 historical cities and 335 ancestral temples in Jiaozuo. The number of the immovable cultural relics and historic sites in the city totals 833, which include 6 under the national key protection, 44 provincial-level and 492 county-level sites. The famous attractions include Jiaying Temple, Cisheng Temple which is the architecture treasure of the Yuan Dynasty, the pagoda of Miaoyue Temple which is the imperial tower of the Five Dynasties, Sansheng Tower which is the top of Henan Province’s gold towers, Yueshan Temple which is one of the top 4 temples in Central Plains and memorial park of Han Yu who was the famous Chinese proser in ancient times. Jiaozuo has the largest bamboo forests in North China. At present, the bamboo forest area of the Bo’ai County in Jiaozuo totals about ten thousand mu, which forms a sea of bamboo forests.

Climate: Jiaozuo enjoys warm temperate continental monsoon climate with dry and windy spring, hot and humid summer, relatively cool autumn and cold winter. The hottest month is July with the monthly average temperature of 27℃ to 28℃, and the coldest month is January with the monthly average temperature of -2℃ to 2℃. The annual average temperature of Jiaozuo is from 12.8 to 15.5℃.

Wildlife Resources

Jiaozuo enjoys an abundance of wildlife resources, which includes 190 varieties of wild animals, 875 species of ligneous plants and 469 species of herbaceous plants. The wild animals include macaques, leopards, tigers, roe deer, river deer and fox.

Yuntai Mountain

Located in Xiuwu County of Jiaozuo, Yuntai Mountain was included in the list of the first batch of World Geoparks for its peculiar karst landform of North China. Yuntai Mountain Scenic Area is a 5A scenic area that integrates National Forest Park and national macaque nature reserve. Yuntai Mountain forms a unique natural landscape with primeval forests, deep and peaceful ravines and pools, waterfalls in thousands of postures and picturesque peaks and rocks.

Qinglong Gorge Scenic Area

Covering an area of about 108 square kilometers, Qinglong Gorge Scenic Area consists of 7 major scenic areas and over 100 scenic spots, which boasts layer upon layer of mountains, the path winding along mountain ridges, lush vegetation and peculiar pools, karst caves, springs, brooks and waterfalls.

Shennong Mountain

Located 23 kilometers northwest of the urban area of Qinyang in Jiaozuo, Shennong Mountain stands vigorous and firm, and its main peak is 1,028 meters tall. It features exquisite natural landscape and a great variety of wildlife which includes 1,912 species of plants and over 260 varieties of terrestrial vertebrates. The most characteristic animals are macaques that are under the state’s second level protection. With the vegetation coverage of over 90%, Shennong Mountain is referred to as the natural air anion bar.
