Four Major Native Medicines Renowned at Home and Abroad

The Four Major Native Medicines refer to Chinese yam, digitalis, achyranthes and chrysanthemuma which are produced in great number in Wen County, Wuzhi County, BoAi County, and Qinyang City.

Digitalis is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine. We use its root as medicine. The dried digitalis is called shengdi, and it has a good medical result in bringing down fever and blood pressure. According to some records in recent years, digitalis has similar function as adrenocortical hormone.

Achyranthes (niuxi) gains its name by the node which looks like the cow’s knee on the stem. We use its root as medicine. It has many medical effects, mainly benefits pelvic and kidney, dredges channels, invigorates extravasated blood, eliminates indigestion, and helps to excrete. The modern medical science points out that achyranthes have enhancing, contracting, and pain-relieving functions for uterus and intestinal canal. It has hypertensive function for cardiovascular system. Also, it is good for the external blood vessel dilatation.

The root of Chinese Yam (shan yao) is slender and fit for consumption. It is not juicy with much starch. It won’t be pulpy when fried or boiled, and its tastes sweet. It is the top in vegetables when considering nutritious components. The modern science points out that Chinese Yam is rich in many kinds of nutritious components, such as starch, glycoprotein, choline, and vitamin C, etc. It is an excellent tonic for building up a good physique and improving health. Its potato has the same function as its root.

The flower, leave, and stem of chrysanthemuma can all be used as medicine. The ancient medical science believes that it gains the gases of the earth and heaven, includes the cream of Jinshui, experiences frost, dew, and siqi (refers to the four medicinal properties of traditional Chinese medicines). It can eliminate pathogenic factor, dredge gas and relieve internal heat, clear liver and improve eyesight, comfort intestine and stomach, adjust membrum, relieve thirst and detoxicate. If you try it for a long time, it is good for blood gases, and can make you look younger than your true age and extend your lifespan. Adding hot water to it and drink it as tea, and it has distinct effect in curing hypertension, headache, and insomnia, and others.
