Jinchang Overview

Jinchang City is located in central Gansu and has historical sites from stone age, sections of Great Wall of China from the Qing and Han Dynasties, and a Western Han site. It can lies on the northern part of the Qilian Mountains, west of the Yellow River, and south of the Alashan Plateau.

Jinchang has a history of over 4,000 years when the ancestors of Gansu people occupied the city. The southern part of the city features mountainous area while the northern part is covered by desert plain. At the heart of the city, there are oasis plains, basins, and mountain valley dotted peaks.


The climate in Jinchang is extremely diverse due to varied topography; subarctic in north and tropical in south. Climate is typically dry and the average temperature is 19°C.

The best time to visit Jinchang is in November when the weather is quite clear. During this month, the day temperature is about 27 C° and night temperature goes down up to 18 C°. Compared to other months, November is considered less rainy.


The most famous food in Jinchang is steamed rolls filled with lamb mutton. This dish has a long history and is cooked in a peculiar method. The ingredients are carefully chosen and cooks have to strictly follow the recipe to ensure that the local flavors are blended perfectly. It’s a great dish. The mutton is rich but not too oily.

Other must-try foods are long-life noodles, trout, Royal Gen Seng, Tonka Bulazi, and Yongchang Boiled Dumplings.


Taking a bus is the only way to reach Jinchang as there are no railway stations or airports here. Jinchang is 400 km from Lanzhou.


Shengrong Temple

This is one of the most famous attractions found at the northwestern part of Gansu. Well-preserved ruins of the Pagoda from Tang Dynasty, Great Wall, and tombs from the kingdom of Xixia, are here.

Liqian Ruins

The ruins lies in the village of Zhelaizhai in Yongchang County. According to legends, back in 206 BC – 24AD, thousands of Roman soldiers settled in Liqian City after they surrendered to the Han Court. On the west side of the city, one can find a part of century-old mud wall which experts believe is an important piece of the history of Liqian. A pavilion painted in white that stands tall beside the wall will remind you of ancient Rome architecture.

Jinchang City

Bell Drum Tower in Yongchang

The tower, which is also known as the Voice and Drum Tower, lies in Yongchang County. It features a perfect blend of Mongol, Tangus, and Han architectural designs. The tower measures 35 meters, has great structure, and a grand look. It features 12 large boards from various celebrities of different dynasties hanging on all the sides of the building. On top of the tower, one will have a great view of desert, oasis, and desert.

Western Big River Mountain

This lies in the Qilian Canyon in the southeastern part of Yongchang County. The mountains and forests here are sights to behold as they are endowed with rarely seen animals, lush grass, and amazing trees.

How to get there: Take a bus from Shandan country going to the Western Big River Mountain that leaves every 30 minutes.

Beihaizi Senic Area

Visiting Beihaizi Senic spot is the best way to enjoy Jinchang. In here, travellers will find the Beihaize Light Tower which is a historical relic protected by the provincial government. The Senic Spot is divided into five scenic zones:

Ancient Building Cluster Scenic zone. This is located at the Beihaizi Park and it displays ancient buildings with ancient towers. Other recreational establishments can also be found here.

Folk-custom Displaying zone. This is street where one can find local residences that display their customs and traditions. Lined up on the streets are local restaurants and shops where handcrafts are made. This street is also usually the venue for holidays and wedding ceremonies. There is also a display hall that showcase historical relics of Yongchang County.

;Water Activity Zone. This refers to the Jinchuan Lake Scenic Zone, which is located on the east part of the Beihaizi Senic Area. Travellers are encouraged to swim on the lake or have a leisurely boat ride.

Tidal Flat Scenic Zone. This is a great destination for travellers as it offers several hot springs and streams. There are established trails made for visitors to enjoy single reciting spring, appointment spring, dust whisking spring, etc. The place is popular for Buddha disciples to clean the dust and visit the Buddha temple.

Wudang Mountain Scenic zone. This one is a mountain area for religious activities. Here, you’ll find the Great Enlightening Temple.

How to get there: Take a coach from Jinchang railway station going to Yongchang. Then, take a taxi or a bus to Beihaizi scenic spot.

Saint Appearance Temple Site and Saint Appearance Temple Tower

This is a national cultural relic established in 561 AD, making it the oldest tower in Ganzu. It was first named Lucky Appearance Temple. Legend has it that in 435AD, a Danyang Sharman named Liu Sake, made a prediction and said that in the future, a saint will appear in the mountain. It will appear headless if the world is in chaos. In 522AD, a thunder broke the ground and the precious stature of Buddha appeared, headless. For this reason, the place was renamed Saint Appearance Temple.

Hallow Canyon

Hallow Canyon is a natural scenic spot that features elegant waters and crystal clear waters. The view here is simply spectacular. The mountains are covered with hundreds of pine trees and different flowers, birds, and butterflies are everywhere. The place is perfect for people who just want to be with nature and relax.

Shandan Military Horse Breeding Farm

The farm is nestled between Qilian Mountain Rhubard Mountains. The place is blessed with fertile land and lush grass and water, making it perfect place to raise Chinese horse-Shandan Horse. These horses are known to be of proportional built, robust, sturdy, and intrepid. They also have the ability to endure gruff breeding, they can easily adjust to anything, and they have good permanence and speed. Their qualities make them perfect for both riding and carrying.
