The Huanghuatingsi Monasteryis located on the middle of the Western hill in the Western Hill Park, 15kilometers to the city center. Huatingsi Monastery, founded in Yuan Dynasty (1320), is one of the oldest and largest Buddhist complexes in Kunming. There are Daxiong Temple, Tianwang Temple, Kwan-yin tier building,Bell Tower, Flower Terrace , Fangsheng Pool(the Free Life Pond), etc. ancient constructures in the Huanghuatingsi Monastery. There are 572 painted sculptures and more than 260 stone animals and birds, which are of marvelous shape and some romantic feel. Still remained in the temple are 17 stone stele of Ming and Qing Dynasty, along with 7 tower tombs from Qing Dynasty.

Tips:

The third day of the third month on the lunar calendar is a good day for a visit,  because every year on that day, climbing the Western Hill (called “shua’xishan”) and traditional dance and indigenous music of the local people are considered big events and  draw a lot of tourists’ attention.
