Waterway

The Mekong River, running through the whole country from north to south, is the main waterway of Laos. The reach of Mekong River from Luang Prabang to Savannakhet is navigable all the year round. However, other reaches of the river are not navigable during the dry seasons and flood seasons. Traveling by boat is one of the most attractive ways to tour Laos. It’s better to go aboard from Nam Ou for tourists can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.

Three kinds of boats are available for tourists. Firstly, the ships traveling between China, Laos and Thailand, takes about three days from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. Secondly, the barge, which is fast and small, stops in the main wharts of Mekong River. Thirdly, the speed boat, which is the swiftest transportation in water, can carry 7 people a time.
