Laos, officially known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is the only inland country in Southeast Asia, located in the north of Indo-China Peninsula with a total area of 236,800 square kilometers. Laos borders China to the north, Cambodia to the south, Vietnam to the east, Burma to the northwest and Thailand to the southwest. Mekong flows through the West Laos.
Laos has the forest coverage of 45%. There are many rivers flowing through Laos, in which Mekong is the most important one. Mekong, which is 1,877 kilometers long, is the boundary line between Laos and Burma and Thailand. Some important cities in Laos, such as Vientiane and Luang Prabang, are built along the river. As Laos abounds with plateaus and mountains, it has the highest average elevation on Indo-China Peninsula.
