Introduction:

there used to be three pagodas in Chaoyang City and they are situated in the south, north and east of old Chaoyang respectively. Now only the South and North Pagodas are retained.

The South Pagoda now lies in the South Chaoyang Street. Constructed in Liao dynasty, it is made of square air bricks with thirteen-layer close eaves. The South Pagoda is 45 meter-high and its square base is 20 meters wide and 10 meters long. There is a huge entrance gate south of the pagoda and in the other three sides locate artificial gates, each of which is accompanied by two steles with the name of a pagoda carved on it.


The North Pagoda is situated in the north and faces the South Pagoda. The currently retained Brick Pagoda was built in Tang dynasty 1300 years ago on the basis of constructions in North Wei dynasty and Sui dynasty. Today’s under-ground palace, brick base and Buddhist sculpture all have their outside constructions competed in Liao dynasty. It is the most ancient pagoda in Northeast China. The brick Pagoda is made of square air bricks with thirteen-layer close eaves. It is 45 meters high with its base of 20 meters wide and five meters high. There is a huge entrance gate south of the pagoda and the other three sides locate artificial gates. Besides, another eight pagodas, eight steles and twelve Buddhist statues are situated there. The North Pagoda is of great artistic value and historical importance to the research OF Buddhism.
