Linxia Hui Autonomous Region is situated in the southwest of Gansu Province. Population in this Region is 1, 9 million. Ethnic nations such as Hui Nationality, Dongxiang Nationality, Baoan Nationality and Salar Nationality account for 56 percent of the total population. Linxia Hui Autonomous Region is one of the two Hui Autonomous Regions in China.
History of a Linxia Hui Autonomous Region is very long. It was called as Juhan, Hezhou, Daohe in the ancient. It was a very important town on the ancient Silk Road, on the the ancient road from Tang Dynasty to the outside world and on the road from Gansu Province to Sichuan Province. It is situated on the adjoining boundary of Loess Plateau and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, climates of cold dry and warm humid, agricultural area and pastoral area. It is an important commodities exchange center of West Pastoral and Central China Agricultural Area. Because of this reason , people honor it as “Great Town in the Area of Yellow River and Huangshui River”, “Land Port of West China”, “Horse and tea exchange center”.(horses and tea were the main commodities what people often exchanged in the ancient time of China).
Linxia Hui Autonomous Region is abundant in ancient animal fossils of geologic period. So it is honored as the “Paradise of ancient animals”. The discovery of dinosaur foot prints fossils in Yongjing County is a miracle in the world. These 1724 dinosaur foot prints fossils were dated from 170 million years ago, and they were categorized into 150 groups of 10 categories. These dinosaur foot prints fossils are rare even in the whole world because of their biggest shape, the great number, high density, and various kinds of the dinosaur foot prints fossils. The fossils are of these following animals: Platybelodons which dated from 13million years ago, Hipparions dated from 17 million years ago, Hezheng Goat which was named according to their discovered place, and of Smilodons. These ancient animal fossils are rare in the world and unique in Asia-Europe Continent. Linxia is the place at where the civilization relics of New Stone Age were distributed most extensively. And at this area, the archaeological excavation is the most fruitful. Many of the unearthed relics are extremely rare treasures. For example, the “King of ancient colored pottery” is now kept in the Museum of Chinese History. This unrivalled colored pottery is famous all around China and brought Linxia Hui Autonomous Region the title of “the Hometown of colored pottery in China”.
Linxia is the beginning place of Dayu’ water conservancy project (Dayu was a famous hero who solved the flood problem in Chinese fairy tale). The trace of Dayu’ river- leading is still kept at the area of Jishi. Linxia Hui Autonomous Region, a place at where many nations live together and different civilizations exist together, is also full of traditional style and local characteristics. There are classic style buildings as well as the magnificent modern ones. The sculptural bricks of Hui Nationality, wooden stature of Han Nationality, colorful paintings of Tibetan Nationality are three outstanding representatives of the art of Linxia Hui Autonomous Region.
Ethnic nationalities in Linxia Hui Autonomous Region are all good at singing and dancing. It is the hometown of Hua’er.( a kind of Chinese folk antiphonic song). This kind of folk songs are with lively rhythm and graceful tune, and the folk dance is happy, humorous and in a quick rhythm. Both of the folk songs and dances are of their nation quality and art characteristics.
Natural sceneries in Linxia Hui Autonomous Region are beautiful and human scenic spots in this area are distinctive. Boating in Three Gorges of Yellow River, you will find it is just like boating in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River of China. Visiting in the Bingling Grotto, you will unceasingly praise the civilizations of Han Nationality and Tibetan Nationality. Looking towards the Prince Rocks, you will appreciate the special atmosphere beyond Great Wall. Walking in and outside of the Linxia City, the magnificent Muslim architectures and atmosphere will impress you deeply. So Linxia Hui Autonomous Region is an important point on the Hui Nationality and Tibetan Nationality tourism zone.
