Mt Kailash (Gang Rimpoche in Tibetan), is located in Burang County, and is 81.3°longitude east, 31°altitude north. It is the highest peak of Gangdise Mountain, with an altitude of 6,638 meters (2,177 feet). Magnificent Mt. Kailash

Mt Kailash (Gong Rimpoche) refers to the “sacred mountain” in Tibetan and “Heaven of Siva” in Sanskrit (Siva is the god of Hinduism). It is the place where the religion of Bon is originated. According to the Indian epics Lomoyana and the Tibetan historic epics History of Gangdise, people began to worship Mt Kailash as early as in 1000 B.C. As the Bon sutra goes, a river, which rose from Mt Kailash, flew into Lake Manasarova, which meant “unconquerable”. Then four great rivers, named after the four supernatural animals in paradise - the horse, lion, elephant and peacock, rose from the lake and flew to four directions.

The river flowing eastward was Zangbo Maquan River (Ma means horse, and the lower branch was called Lamaputela River), in which were many emeralds. People believed that water from the river could make them as strong as horses. The river flowing southward was Majia Zangbo Peacock River (the lower branch called Ganges River), in which was much silver sand. People believed that water from the river could make them as lovely as peacocks. The river flowing westward was Langqen Zangbo Xiangquanhe River (Xiang refers to elephant, and the lower branch was called Sutlei River), in which were many gold mines. People believed that water from the river could make them as strong as elephants. The river flowing northward was Senge Zangbo Shiquanhe River (Shi refers to lion, and the lower branch was called Hindu River), in which were many diamond mines. People believed that water from the river could make them as brave as lions. Pilgrims from India, Bhutan, Nepal and China cluster to the mountain to make circumambulation every year.

It is said that Mt Kailashis is the Sumeru Hill in Buddhism. Semeru means the center of the world. As the legend goes, 360 deities once lived on the mountain.

Indians call it Mt Kailash. They also think it is the center of the world. They believe that Siva, the god with highest supernatural power and the highest rank among the three gods of Hinduism, lives in the mountain. The upper branches of Hindu River, Ganges River rise from the mountain. So it is not strange to see a lot of Indian pilgrims there.

Climate:

The weather is very changeable on the mountain. The temperature changes greatly during day and night. Tourist should know about the climate before going and prepare enough warm clothes.
Transportation:

The only possible transport to Mt Kailash from the south is to hitchhike a vehicle (Sometimes it is only possible to cover one part of the distance, and then you have to hitchhike another vehicle to continue with your trip). The transport from the north is mainly the trucks running to and from Shiquanhe Town. It is 330 km from Shiquanhe to the Sacred Mountain, and it takes 1 and half days to reach the mountain. The fee is about 50-80 RMB.

Admission fee

It is charged to go circling the mountain, and the price is going up every year. The admission fee in year 2000 was RMB10 yuan per person; in 2001 it was RMB100 yuan per person. If the number of people who come for the circling keeps increasing, it is probable that the admission fee will be rising.

Best time to visit

Any time is ok for the Circling. However, April 15 is the day when Buddha Sakyamuni was born, the day he became the Buddha, and also the day when he passed away and reached the state of nirvana. On that day, a ceremony of replacing the Mani flag is held at the entrance of the Sacred Mountain. The Tibetan Buddhists believe that the circumambulation this day will accumulate more virtues for them. So there are usually more people there that day.

More Tips:

The accommodation:
1. Gangdise Hotel: The price: RMB 60 yuan. It costs RMB 10 yuan per day to deposit the baggage at the hotel. Tourists can put up their own tents in the yard of the hotel if they get the permission to do that from the hotel. And they should also be charged about RMB 15-20 yuan per person. Tourists are not allowed to put up their tents in the field.

2. Dajin Hotel: The price: RMB 60 yuan. The hotel has power supply generated by their own electrical machine at night.

3. Neither Gangdise Hotel nor Dajin Hotel has dining hall, and they do not offer food service.

4. The tent restaurants around the hotels also offer accommodation. Generally it costs RMB 20 yuan for a bed. And it is advisable to have tea and dinner at the same restaurant because the price may be cheaper. Tourists can also buy some vegetables and other uncooked food at the restaurant, borrow furnaces and cook food by themselves.

5. There are some Chinese restaurants around, but the food is very expensive. There is a restaurant that sells delicious and cheap boiled dumplings. Opposite to the restaurant is the Ngari Plateau Teahouse. The sweet tea tastes good, and it is good to drink some sweet drinks to renew the energy before circumambulating the mountain.

The circumambulation (it takes three days)
Tourists should bring their own food, such as instant noodles, sausages and chocolate for the journey. It is not convenient to buy food for the journey in Dajin Township, so tourists are suggested to buy some in Shiquanhe Town or before they reach Lhaze. Water purifiers are good to purify the drinking water on the way of the circumambulation. The temples on the mountain offer accommodation for the tourists. Hot water and quilts are available there. Tourists should deposit their heavy baggage at the hotel before the circumambulation. Otherwise, they will be overloaded on the way, which is dangerous because the altitude is high there. There are many porters waiting outside Gangdise Hotel and Dajin Hotel every morning. They usually charge RMB 60 yuan per day. If you want to hire one, you’d better talk with them clearly about the price. The journey: the first day (26 km, about 10 hours): Circumambulation westward from Dajin Township→5 km →the Entrance (there is a piece of 20-meter high sutra standing at the entrance) → 6 km→the riverside (the temple on the hillside along the opposite bank of the river offers accommodation for tourists) →15km→temple (accommodation). The second day (22 km, about 8 hours): the temple→4 km→the burial site→4 km →Mani Pile in the lap (at an altitude of 5,700 meters) →4 km→riverside→10 km→the temple (accommodation). The third day (9 km, about 5 hours): The temple→6 km→the tollgate of the exit→3 km→ Dajin Township 3.The climate: The weather is very changeable on the mountain. Other things: There will be many people on the way of the circumambulation. Tourists should take their own meal boxes along. Take some bags to keep the garbage. If the vehicle does not reach Dajin Township, tourists will get off at Parga Checkpoint, which is 7 km south of Dajin Township. Then they should walk to Dajin before they reach the hotels there. Be sure to drink clean water. Take some medicines along.
