This Nanjing Museum, covering an area of 12.9 hectare, is located right next to the city gate--Zhongshan Men. It was founded by Cai Yuan Pei (a modern democratic revolutionary and educationist) in l933 and constructed in the style of a traditional Chinese temple. Nanjing Museum is reputed as a synthetic museum of art. Besides, it is not only one of Chinese key museums but the important patriotic education base in Nanjing.

The Nanjing Museum shoulders the tasks that investigates and unearths underground sites and tumulus; protects cultural relics; keeps artifacts and so on. The museum records the tracks of Nanjing' s development in Chinese different history stages. Meanwhile, it shows us the cultural accomplishments in Nanjing. According to record, there are various ancient treasures stored in this museum: 400,000 cultural relics here date from around the 11th century BC up to the founding of the People's Republic; jade, pottery and stone implements from Jiangsu's prehistoric period; artifacts from the Longshan and associated cultures from 4000 to 2500 BC; and a wide range of porcelain, paintings and bronzes, as well as maps and displays of traditional handicrafts.

Except for visiting these ancient treasures, visitors can enjoy a rich variety of activities in this museum. Nanjing Museum is notable for holding special subject lectures, which has attracted over 12,000,000 visitors home and abroad.
