Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first double-deck type bridge of railway and highway designed and built by China. It was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records given the name of “the World’s Longest Double-deck Type Bridge of Railway and Highway” in 1960. In July, 2014, it was selected into the Immovable Culture Relic.
The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is a piece of China's history and an engineering feat. The upper layer is 4589 meters long and 15 meters wide, which makes it possible for 4 vehicles to drive simultaneously; the under layer is 6, 772 meters long and 14 meters wide allowing two trains to move side by side on the double tracks.
Both sides of the top are also equipped with a 2 meter wide sidewalk. 9 piers anchor the bridge to the river below; the highest one is 85-meter high with a base covering about 400 square meters. The longest span of the bridge reaches up to 160 meters wide. 200 reliefs throughout the banisters help support this massive structure.
Overlook the Whole Bridge
The 6, 772 m long bridge spans the grand Yangtze River. Visitors can take a taxi to the bridge tower and get to the top of it. There visitors can overlook the whole marvelous bridge and the grand Yangtze River. Top of the tower provides very good views across the river.
The bridge experienced the period of Chinese Cultural Revolution. It still remains the slogans of this era on the tower: Long Life Chairman Mao. It is like being carried back to the period. Near the bridge, many historical traces are preserved: the flagstaffs with rusty textures, small bungalow, old post station that no longer stand any height.
The nightscape of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is a must-see sight. In the evening, when the whole bridge is lighted up, the sky above and the river below will be brightening. The bridge will look like a pearl string lying on the Yangtze River.
Near the charming Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, there is a Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Park. In the park, visitors can see many varieties of plants.
