Not like brocade, most of the silver ornaments are made by men in the minority ethnic groups in southwest China. Many of the working procedures have been inherited and developed for generations. Typical patterns and designs on such ornaments are human images, birds, beasts and flowers, many of which are of high artistic value and fantastic imagination. The silver ornaments serve for many purposes and therefore vary in shape, size and weight. Some big ornament, such as a solid bracelet or neck chaplet, uses quite a lot of silver and does not require overly delicate craftsmanship. Other small silver pieces use much less silver but demand complicated and lengthy craftsmanship.
