Overview

Qingdao, as a coastal city located to the west of the Yellow Sea, is situated in Southern Shandong Peninsula and North Temperate Zone, enjoying a typical temperate monsoon climate, with the annual average temperature of about 12.3 ℃. Thanks to the impact of marine climate, Qingdao boasts very comfortable weather condition and moderate temperature, with four distinct seasons. It’s not too hot in summer, nor too cold in winter. There is sufficient rain in Qingdao annually, with the annual rainfall of about 900 millimeters. The annual sunshine duration is about 2,000 hours and the temperature differences are small in a day. August is the hottest month of Qingdao, with the monthly average temperature of about 25.1 ºC (77.2 ºF) and January is ranked as the coldest month, with the monthly average temperature of -0.9 ºC (30.4 ºF). Each year, Qingdao holds a variety of festivals and activities, such as the popular Qingdao Beer Festival in August, attracting a large number of tourists.

Best Visiting Time

The periods suitable for visiting Qingdao last from April to the end of October, among which August is the best period for enjoying yourself by the seaside, such as swimming and participating water activities and autumn is ranked as the best time for tourists to enjoy the fresh sea food. August is ranked as the golden period for people who love beaches, with sea water temperature of about 20°C( 68°F). Meanwhile, the annual Qingdao International Beer Festival is usually held in August in Qingdao, lasting sixteen days from August 14th to 29th. During the festival, tourists can fully enjoy dazzling lighting, charming breeze, great beer and poetic exploration.

Spring (March, April, May)

Spring usually lasts from March to May in Qingdao, with very comfortable weather. The temperature in spring gets warmer gradually. The temperature ranges from 1.67 to 8.33 ºC in March, from 7.22 to 13.89 ºC in April and from 12.78 to 19.44 ºC in May. For packing, long-sleeved coats and jackets are enough.

Summer (June, July, August)

Summer lasts from June to August in Qingdao, which is quite humid and rainy, covering about 65% rainfall of the total. It’s one of the best periods for visiting Qingdao, without extreme hot days.. Thanks to the comfortable water temperature, it’s very suitable for swimming. Meanwhile, the famous Qingdao International Beer Festival is usually held in Qingdao annually, attracting a large number of beer lovers. For packing, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, waterproof shoes, sunglasses, sunhats and sun cream are needed.

Autumn (September, October, November)

Autumn in Qingdao is relatively warm, which is also the best period for enjoying the beautiful scenery and the fresh seafood in Qingdao. The temperature ranges from 5.56 to 24.44℃. Though the weather is comfortable, there is usually strong wind during this time. For packing, long-sleeved coats, sweaters are necessary. 

Winter (December, January, February) 

Winter in Qingdao is very cool, dry and windy, with little snowfall. The average temperature is about -0.9℃ and lowest temperature is about -3.89ºC. For packing, warm clothes are necessary, such as cotton-padded jackets and shoes, down jackets and thermal underwear are needed. Chinese New Year, also named Spring Festival, usually falls in February every year, when there are huge crowds traveling in the whole China, thus, tourists should avoid this period.

Avoid Peak Traveling Periods

It is strongly suggested that tourists should avoid peak traveling periods in China, when there are numerous Chinese people traveling, bringing inconvenience to tourists, such as transportation and accommodation. During peak traveling periods, it’s very difficult to get a flight or train ticket and Hotels raise their prices a lot. Shopping malls are crowded with people.

The peak traveling periods include some traditional Chinese Festivals , including New Year’s Day (January 1st to 3rd), Spring Festival ( late January or early February), May Day( May 1st to 3rd) and National Day holidays( October 1st to 7th).
