Snow lotus is formally called Saussurea involucrate, which belongs to Asteraceae family, Saussurea genus. The local names of snow lotus are Shuimu Xuelian and Xue Tuzi. Snow lotus plants on the high altitude area of the mountain, which is 3900-5600 meters above the sea level. They are perennial herbaceous plants and the part above the earth could be used as medical materials. The main producing regions of snow lotus are Haibei Prefecture, Haixi Prefecture, Hainan Prefecture, Yushu Prefecture, Huangnan Prefecture and Guoluo Prefecture. There are also some snow lotuses on the mountaintops in the agricultural region on the eastern part of Qinghai Province. The nature of the snow lotus is cool and its taste is bitter. So people always use it to clear heat and do detoxification. It is a good for dispelling rheumatism, activating the main and collateral channels, dealing with the anthracnose, curing apoplexy and allaying altitude sickness.
