Four Great Meeting Festivals in Taer Temple
Time: first month of the lunar New Year
Place: in Taer Temple
Content: The first meeting festival is called prayer meeting festival of the first month of the lunar New Year. It is held from the eighth of the first month of the lunar New Year to the eighteenth. On the fourteenth of the first month of the lunar New Year, Yamataka safeguard dance is performed; in morning of the fifteenth of the first month of the lunar New Year, people bathe ; large-scale exhibition of flowers made by ghee is held at night.
The second meeting festival is called April meeting festival, held from the eighth of the fourth month of the lunar calendar to the fifteenth. It is for commemorating the birth of Sakyamuni. It is also a meeting festival for nirvana and entering into religion. At noon of the fourteenth of the fourth month of the lunar calendar, Yamataka safeguard dance is performed; in the morning of the fifteenth of the fourth month of the lunar calendar, people bake the statues of Buddha in the sun; in the afternoon, horse head Yamataka safeguard dance is performed.
The third meeting festival is also called June meeting festival. It is held from the third to the ninth of June to remember the meeting festival of the three turning the dharma-cakra of Sakyamuni. In the morning of the seventh of June, people bake the statues of Buddha; in the afternoon, horse head Yamataka safeguard dance is performed; in the morning of the eighth of June, people go out of the temple to pray; in the afternoon, horse head Yamataka safeguard dance is performed again.
The fourth meeting festival is also called September meeting festival. It is held from the twentieth to twenty-sixth of the ninth month of lunar calendar. It is a meeting festival for the advent of Sakyamuni. There are many activities, such as, dancing Sangjian, worshiping Buddha, etc. All temples are opened all day for people to worship Buddha; at noon of the twenty-third of September, horse head Yamataka safeguard dance is performed.
