Tour of Qinghai Lake International Road Cycling Race was first held in the year 2002 and has been held from July to August around Qinghai Lake every year since then in Qinghai Province which is located in the northwest of China has an average elevation of more than three thousand meters. Tour of Qinghai Lake International Road Cycling Race, ranking 2.3 grades approved by UCI, has become a top-level cycling race in Asia and the international road cycling race with the highest altitude in the world, which is only second to the professional tour tournament, such as Tour de France, Tour de Italy and Tour de Spain bicycle race, attracting more than 100 athletes to participate in the race every year. It is also the largest international road cycling race in China with the largest number of participating teams and the highest bonus and an integrated grand meeting containing with sports, tourism, culture and environmental protection. The whole cycling race lasts for 9 days with the total cycling distance of 1,300 kilometers, the average altitude of over 3,000 meters and the bonus of 250,000 dollars.

Tour of Qinghai Lake International Road Cycling Race, hosted by the Chinese State General Administration of Sport, the State Administration of Radio, Film and television and Qinghai government, receives favorable concern and wide attention from all quarters of society which contributes to the success of the road cycling race.

The total distance of the road cycling is about 1,355 kilometers, consisting of the race distance of 1,280 kilometers, the transfer of 20 kilometers and the parade of 5.9 kilometers. In the whole race, the highest altitude is about 3,792 meters and the lowest altitude is about 1,880 meters. The race route centers on the beautiful Qinghai Lake which is the largest inland saltwater lake in China and extends to the surrounding area with enchanting natural scenery along the route where the participants can enjoy the unique natural scenery while they are racing simultaneously, such as majestic mountains, limpid rivers, golden fields, old pagodas, green forests and the beautiful limpid water of Qinghai Lake. Besides, the opening ceremony of the cycling race is an important part of the cycling race with artistic performance with regional characteristics and traditional folk culture.
