The Zhalong Natural Reserve is a significant attraction not just because this pumps up tourism within Qiqihaer, but also because it serves as an important stop-over for migratory birds.
This wetland reserve is part of the route of birds which flies from the Arctic to the Southeast Asia. Because of the impressive marshland in this place, it is where over 3,000 different bird species have found permanent habitat. Among which include the Marsh Grassbird and Red-Crowned Cranes. Because of its wonderful surroundings, this can be a great destination for individuals who want to relax, as well as parents who want to spend quality time with their kids. 

Things To Do

Bird Watching and Photography 

The Zhalong Natural Reserve is a popular option especially for individuals who have the keen interest for bird-watching. A lot of amateur and professional photographers also go to this place to capture photos of different bird species while in their natural habitat. 
This place is considered as state-level natural reserve. In the year 1992, it has been included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Because of that, the government implements precautionary measures to ensure that the birds remain undisturbed even if this attraction is frequented by tourists. There are areas where tourists can stay and enjoy the amazing surroundings. On the other hand, there are also sections which are inaccessible so that the birds would not be bothered, especially during the breeding season. 

Witnessing The Home of the Crane

The Zhalong Natural Reserve is also labeled as The Home of the Crane because of the impressive number of crane species which are found in this place. It has been recorded that there are only 15 crane species across the globe. Amazingly, 6 out of the 15 can be seen in Zhalong Natural Reserve. Among the crane species which are in this place include the hooded cranes, white-crowned cranes, red-crowned cranes, demoislle cranes, white cranes and other more common cranes. What is even more impressive is that the remaining population of the cranes in the whole world is only 1000 and out of that number, 700 of which are in Zhalong. 

Exploring Wetland Nature Reserve

Aside from spending time in observing the birds, this is also a great venue for some leisurely walk because of the captivating natural water formation in the area. When the water from the Wuyu’er River overflows, the marshes are also filled with water. There are also smaller lakes which add more beauty to the surroundings. 

Animal Sightings

The main reason why Zhalong Natural Reserve is frequented by families and thousands of tourists from different parts of the globe is because this is not only home for birds. Its well-preserved surroundings is also home for 46 fish species, 21 beast species and 277 insect species. So, aside from enjoying the relaxing sights, a trip to this place can also be very educational, especially for the kids. There are also storks, swans, herons, grebes and other species.

How to Get There?

The Zhalong Natural Reserve can be reached by taking the bus from the corner of Longsha Lu and Zhanqian Dajie. Another option is to take the “tuk-tuk” which is a three-wheeled motorcycle. You can also take a cab which will drive you to Zhalong Natural Reserve in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes.

More Tips:

Spring and summer months are the best time to visit the Zhalong Natural Reserve. The weather is pleasant for spending some time outdoors. Best of all, this is also the time when red-crowned cranes hatch their eggs so visitors get to witness the little ones.
