Must We Join A Local Tour Agency To See Beijng?

Hi, Thank you for answering the question posed earlier. We are flying to Beijing soon and need to know whether we can see Beijing comprehensively without joining a local tour agency. We are "Free & Easy" travellers; not tied down by time constraint, scenic limitation and forced purchases at 'recommended' shops. Any brochure and recommended guides etc.... will be much appreciated. Thank you
