My friends and I are arriving in Kunming mid September 4 days before joining a trip from there to Dali Lijang and Shangrila. Is there enough to do in and around the city for 4 days. I want to experience the real China and would quite like to stay out of the Kunming. Any advise welcome about what to visit where to stay in or Kunming and further afield.

- Isn''t Kunming real China? If it isn''t, I wonder what it is? For day trips near Kunming, you can hire a taxi for to visit Shilin (Stone Forest) and Jiuxiang (waterfalls and caves). Both I think are worth it. Shilin is crowded, but by walking a little it is easy to escape the crowds, and the limestone rocks are pretty amazing. Within Kunming there are the east and west pagodas, the Yuantong Zen Buddhist Temple - get there early before the tour groups to really enjoy it - and the Green Lake Garden which is a fairly relaxing place: badminton, sword dancing, tai chi and so on. For brunch you can try Salvadors .

- The Western Hills outside Kunming are also quite nice. For things inside the city, Green Lake is a great scene on the weekends with live music and "real" Chinese people taking it easy. Also the clubs in Kundu are great fun if you're a nightlife person.
