Hello. We will be traveling in guilin this August. We will stay in guilin for one night and then catch a bus to longsheng to see the terraced fields and back to Guilin, take a bus to yangshuo? Can we do that on our own? We do not know chinese. Will language a big problem for us? Can the staff at the bus station understand us? thanks

The staffs arent so educated. They dont speak English. Perhaps one or two high rank officer can speak English? I prefer to ask others. Traveling alone anyone in the whole is possible. The solution is cash. It is the international language and desires of every human beings. Whoever see the cash, they will try to earn it. If you dont have that much cash, then you have to do a lot of homework preparing how to communicate.

The simple answer to ur last part of question (whether any staff speaks English) is NO. Even in big cities of China, it is an impossible thing to dream about. But one thing amazingly happen everywhere in China. We travelled a lot in there and especially by car. We found little difficulty, if any, in getting tickets, buying stuff, and getting a room. Chinese are intellegent people and love foreigners. So the answer to ur first part is yes, u can travel alone without any help from any translator. One thing, if u can, get a Chinese friend phone number, coz when u got stuck dead some place, u can alway call that guy and explain to him or her and then he or she can tell to the staff in Chinese. We have done this so many times. Bon Voyage!

I think that in Guilin now, a lot of people can speak english though not very well, but, you can communicate by a lot of means. language is not a big problem actually. and you can take bus to yangshuo from guilin directly. it is very convinient.

Very rare people speak english in Guilin. I did the same thing with you last year. I bought bus tickets for yangshuo with the help of a student who knew limited english. The ticket sellers there could neither speak nor understand english. Luckily the friendly student helped us out. Boarding was also a big problem. On one could tell you where your bus was waiting. They indeed broadcasted the departure and arriving of buses (I guess) all the time through a loudspeaker but only in Chinese. The only way you could communicate with the staff was pointing and some other gestures.

Do not count on staff at bus station in China speaking a word in english. Learn some basic Chinese is of great use when traveling in China.
