Woodblock New Year Picture, Baoji

Baoji Woodblock New Year Picture was created by a Mr. Tai living in Feng Xian in Shanxi province. According to the record it began in the Tang and Song Dynasty flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasty .Before 1507, about ten Tai families engaged in New Year pictures and they have been engaged more than 500 years on this job. By the year of 1950, the Woodblock New Year picture had had five types: door pictures, Shimei pictures, genre pictures, play and story pictures and Shenma pictures. The Woodblock New Year pictures are made in different shapes and sizes and the maximum of yearly sales volume of such pictures ever came up to 6 million.

 The pictures are wholly printed by hand with a poignant contrast in color and purity printed and exaggerated in shape, remaining the simple and unsophisticated style, which is popular with the people living in Shanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai and Sichuan provinces.

Baoji Woodblock New Year Picture having its roots among the folk people living in the northwest of China is not only a pure folk art but also precious historical materials for researching the social culture in the rural area of northwest of China.
