Brief Introduction:

Known as “Treasure in the East” “Gem in the East”, Zhuhuan was listed as “world wide protected bird” in the twelfth conference of world protection of birds. The reserve is located in southern Shaanxi, more specifically, in Yao Ditch, Jin River, Sancha River, and so on of Yang County, Hanzhong City. According to statistics in 1984, there were only 20 Zhuhuan in the world, among them, except for 3 caged in Japan and several kept in zoos in Beijing , all the rest lived in Yang County at the southern foot of Qin Mountains, thereby the name “ No one Zhuhuan colony of Qin Mountains”. Zhuhuan, formally named Nipponia Nippon, called Japanese Crested Ibis in English, has other names like Zhulu (common name), flamingo, red-face Huanlu, and Japanese Fengtou. Back in 1970s, there was already no report of wild Zhuhuan in Siberia and Korean Peninsula. Zhuhuan is regarded as auspicious bird. It is 80 centimeters long, and its weight is about 1800 grams. The whole body is white, with beautiful vermilion wings, abdomen and tail. Its mouth is about 17 centimeters long, the tip of which is slightly curvy downwards. Its face is red. Its head has dozens of willow-leaf-like feather, forming feather coronal. Its legs and paws are also vermilion. It likes to rest on shallow gully and look for aquatic insects in rice paddy as its food. Zhuhuan mostly hover in groups. It is glorified by poets of past dynasties for its unique feather colors, elegant posture, and light gesture of dancing when it leaves and lands on the ground. Since the rediscovery of Zhuhuan in China in 1981, the country attack great importance to it. In 1983, Yang County Protection and Observation Station (changed to Shaanxi Zhuhuan Protection and Observation Station in 1986) was set up in Yang County to protect the specie of Zhuhuan in nature. Now we make great achievement in protecting Zhuhuan. The number has increased from 7 at the time of its rediscovery to over 300.
