There is a wildly-go-round ballad among people in Shangyang County: When it’s young it’s green and turns yellow when it’s old. Twining and twisting, it becomes thicker and longer. Made into sandals for climbing in spring, and weaved as a mat for sleeping in summer. Twined into coir raincoat preventing wind and rain in autumn, and tweaked as ropes for caching musk deer. It’s a great happiness that girls are so clever and deft and sell the weaving products far abroad. This ballad tells us the usage of the Chinese alpine rush, which is also one of the Three Precious Things in S Hangzhou . The Chinese alpine rush here is more than one meter long, so it’s a kind of ideal fiber source. The original color is golden. It is luster and easy to dye. Although it is wild, nowadays people in Shanyang can plant it at their fields because of the biological science. Long time ago, people made it into ropes, sandals, paper, coir raincoats, but people today make it into mat, curtain, portieres and export them to lots of countries including Japan, USA, Southeast Asia and some countries or areas in Europe.
