Introduction of the tourist spot
Aotou Rock Scenic Area is an ancient architecture complex, which is precise in its structure. The exquisite and quiet Aotou Rock complex, of which the screen wall facing the gate of the building and the carved stone form a delightful contrast, and whose yard is decorated by the luxuriant bamboos, belongs to the key cultural relics under provincial protection. Autou Rock was built in the Jiajing period in Ming Dynasty (1522-1566) and is the place where the Museum of Linqing City is located.
The name of Aotou Rock comes from its geographical surroundings. The original canal of the Yuan Dynasty ran through the Wenjin Bridge to the city from the northern side of it. In the Ming Dynasty, the project of expanding the southern part of the canal was launched, which made it way through the public park and flew to the city at the lock entrance. There is also a moat on the western side of the Rock, thus it is surrounded by waters. Then it got the name “Zhongzhou” (literally, the land in the middle). Aotou Rock is on the prominent place of “Zhongzhou”, where people laid a number of stones to build a dam in Zhengde Period of the Ming Dynasty. The shape of the dam looked like the head of a sea turtle, and the Linqing and Huitong lock entrances of the canal of Yuan Dynasty and the newly built two entrances of the canal of Ming Dynasty like the feet of the sea turtle. The Guangji Bridge behind it looked exactly like the tail of the turtle. So the governor Malun titled it as “Aotou Rock” (which literally means the rock of the head of a sea turtle). Among the whole complex, the east building is called “Guanyin Pavilion”, the west hall “Luzu Hall” and the north one “Gantang Shrine”. Originally, there was a wooden bridge outside the door, on which was written “Aotou Rock” by Fang Yuanhuan - a calligrapher of the Ming Dynasty.
Aotou Rock is also an important place for revolution commemorating. It has gone through the disturbances in Great Revolution, anti-Japanese War and War of Liberation. It was the location of the leading organ and an important activity site of China Communist Party.
The Brick Exhibition Hall in the courtyard of Aotou Rock displays tribute bricks made in Linqing County in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Linqing tribute brick is well known both in China and abroad for the character of “No alkali and no erosion. Sound come out when hit, no holes appear when break.” The brick was exclusively supplied as tribute for the imperial buildings. One of the most important building materials for the Beijing imperial city, namely Dacheng Brick, is mainly produced in Linqing. So the historians have compared Beijing as City flowing from afar.
