It is also called Scutiger Gourd. As a peculiar traditional craftwork, carved gourd became popular in late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. It has exquisite design and superb workmanship. Though it is quite expensive, the supply is hardly adequate to the demand. Since 1978, artists have made many bold innovations based on the traditional techniques. They cut the gourds into different shapes and change plane carve to penetrate carve, which make the patterns more stereoscopic. Many new products are made with different characters which are good presents.
