Luodian Ancient Town is located in Baoshan District of Shanghai, about 25 kilometers from downtown Shanghai, 30 kilometers from Hongqiao International Airport and 55 kilometers from Pudong International Airport, which enjoys convenient transportation. With a history of over 700 years, Luodian Ancient Town began to be built in the Yuan Dynasty, which enjoys rich cultural deposits and superior geological location.
After years of development, the new Luodian Ancient Town begins to take shape, and it’s evaluated as Shanghai New Urban Landscape Ecological Town, China Green Ecological Culture Demonstration Town and China Famous Town. In 2002, Luodian Ancient Town was ranked as one of the key areas for development in Shanghai, which marks the beginning of another construction, such as the Meilan Lake New Town of Northern Europe style and Luodian Ancient Street with the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
As far back as Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, Luodian had been a commercial town abounding with abundant products. In the period of Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty, the commerce and trade became even more prosperous in Luodian, especially for the trade of cotton and cotton cloth. In the suburb of Shanghai, Luodian Ancient Town is reputed as the Gold Luodian. Luodian Ancient Town boasts 2 historic buildings, including the main hall of jade palace of the Ming Dynasty and the ancient long street architectural complex of the Qing Dynasty.

If you are planning to go to Luodian, remember to have a look at the North European Town. Outside the old city of Luodian is an (assumed) replica of a just as old Swedish town (called Sigtuna). This is part of the project One City Nine Towns, with eight other foreign inspired towns all around Shanghai. Just get off the bus a few stops before Luodian proper and you will be there. Apart from the Luodian Old Town which is just a part of the whole town, Luodian itself could be worth a visit as well as an example of a typical modern Chinese small town.
