Rockbund Art Museum is a private museum housed in the building that was initially the Royal Asiatic Society. It is adjacent to the older National Industrial Bank and focuses mainly on contemporary art.
The museum has rotating exhibits throughout the year. It was opened in the year 2010 as the part of Back Bund project and is considered to be a promising and modern, top art venues in the city.
Things to Do
Located at the northern end of Bund area, the building where the Royal Asiatic Society had been formerly located is now the Rockbund Art Museum. The building is restored and has been converted to the only modern contemporary art museum located in the riverfront area. The museum was opened in May, 2010 and it offers an international platform for exchange and promotion of contemporary art with educational programs and exhibitions. The inaugural exhibition was curated by Cai Guoqiang, a world renowned artist. The exhibition currently features various works created by Zeng Fanzhi who is a well known artist of contemporary art.
Rockbund Art Museum was built by George L Wilson, a British architect in 1932. It is an Art Deco building that had once been a very influential venue for public education and academic exchange in the Orient. Also, it is an early home for one of the first ever modern museums of China, Shanghai Museum.
An International Platform
Rockbund Art Museum was once the earliest Chinese museum. It is considered to be an international platform that popularized art. The museum regularly arranges activities along the theme of the culture and history of the Bund.
Rockbund Art Museum remains closed on Mondays and is open for different hours during the rest of the days in the week. Also known as RAM, the Rockbund Art Museum is quite small but it does have several interesting exhibitions. The museum brings in collaborative art and exhibitions with art works of Chinese artists. The interior of the museum is often used as a part of its exhibition itself rather than just hosting it.
Developing Contemporary Art
Rockbund Art Museum hosts various lecture series on interesting topics. It is located in a very beautiful and interesting building which had been originally designed in 1932 by George Wilson. The contemporary museum serves as the anchor for Waitanyuan development project. It aims to play a major role in promoting contemporary art in the city. The main building where the museum is located combines Chinese flourishes with Art Deco with its octagonal bagua designs and balconies. On the first floor is the lecture hall, the second floor has a library while the 3rd and 4th floors have exhibition halls. The outdoor space as well as the adjoining building is used for larger exhibits. Audio guides can be rented by tourists.
Rockbund Art Museum is located right behind Peninsula Hotel in northern Bund. Other than the museum itself there are various other places located around worth visiting. The historic Bund offers many interesting gems and the view of Pudong skyline across the river are particularly interesting. Visitors can also stop for drinks at the Long Bar of Waldorf Astoria or at the Glamour Bar.
