In recent years the old factories and warehouses along Moganshan Road has become one of Shanghai s most fashionable art districts. Walking in the area you can easily get lost among the small and winding lanes and the rebuilt factory buildings where every available space has been transformed into small workshops or large exhibition areas, showcasing both established artists and the up-and-coming of the Chinese art scene. Here you can find exhibitions of everything from contemporary sculpture and oil paintings to old Art Deco furniture and objects made out of scrap metal. It is easy to spend an afternoon here and still not be able to find all of the small galleries, which also makes it a good place to return to.
A few years ago when this was a place where local artists lived and worked, but as has happened with the 798 Art District in Beijing , Moganshan Road has been inviting to all kinds of commercial enterprises, so along with the art exhibitions you can also find a range of small art shops and clothes shops as well as cafés. Still the whole area is vibrant with art and it has been able to retain a certain underground feeling, as the art has leaked out of the galleries and spread along the buildings themselves in the form of graffiti (which is rare in China). In the night time some of the spaces also open their doors for local Chinese punk and rock band to perform.

really nice venue with kommune kind of feel to it. of course it is commercialised...but the artists andd galerists want to live too right? Still a very good location for an arty sunday afternoon :-) check out the souvenir-shop on the 2nd floor of the bar/restaurant.

Moganshan Rd offers a plethora of art in many forms including graffiti, photography, sculpture and much more. It is an easy 5 minute walk across the bridge from the nearest tube station. There are a huge variety of art styles here. One of my favourites was a small print block making establishment where designs were carved with wood and then the designs printed through a press. There was a very good represenation of recycled art and many inspiring art displays that showcased Chinese and international artists. There was a lovely 2 story book shop with wonderful books particularly of real aesthetic pleasure where Japanese books showing textile art.
