Historically, Shanghai Old Street was firstly named after the Miaoqian Street where a great many old banks, jewelry shops, restaurants, theatres and other shops assembled, forming a crowded road connecting Sixteen Shops, Shanghai Chenghuang Temple and the Yu Garden. Unique geographical location and special landscapes along the street make it boast high business value.
Shanghai Old Street, originally named Fangbang Middle Road, is 825 meters long, whose eastern section extends to Renmin Road and western section, to Henan road, south. The architectural style and layout keep the characteristics of residences from late Ming Dynasty to the early Republic, even connected to the Western culture. All businesses in Shanghai Old Street represent traditional trades and folk culture.
The street is divided into eastern and western sections by Guanyi Street. By elaborate decoration and remolding, the eastern section keeps the characteristics of residences in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic. The houses on the street are fitted with checked windows, shop-fronts of wooden boards, balustrades and swing doors, roofs with upturned eaves and protruding corners, laced drain pipes and horse-shape wall tops. The buildings in the western section are copies of Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture, expressing the folk styles of Shanghai’s old downtown. There in the street you will find hundred-year old stores, Tonghanchun, Laotongsheng, Wuliangcai, Qiutianbao, Old Shanghai Teahouse, Deshun Western Food Restaurant, Chuanfeng Deyi Restaurant, Xishi Soya Bean curd Store, Dingniangzi Cloth Store, Rongshun Restaurant and Boyintang. There are also newly opened DanfengTeahouse, Clinic of Famous Chinese medical doctors and others of traditional characteristics. This old street, along with the Star Street in the north, makes a panorama of all trades and businesses in Shanghai.
