Once you enter lane 210 of Taikang Road you are transfered to another world. From the common Chinese street outside, with its fruit shops and street food stalls, you step into the modern and the hip Shanghai. In the maze of old Shanghainese shikumen alleys stretching all the way between Taikang Road and Jianguo Road, trendy galleries, boutiques and cafes has mushroomed in only a few years. Here you can find galleries with photography, oil painting, woodworks or embroidery, as well as exclusive shops for pearls, cashmere, designer clothes, imported Japanese toys, and of course the ever so popular Mao kitsch. Around every corner there are hip cafes and restaurants with everything from vietnamese cuisine, imported wines, homemade ice-cream, and, last but not least, your indispensable latte.
All of this is superimposed on the regular life of the alleys, so between the boutiques there are still old Chinese men and women playing cards and going about their daily life. It is somewhat similar to Xintiandi but with a more cultural and down-to-earth flair.
