Zhujiajiao Town around shore of vast Dingshan Lake is a fan-shaped old town with hundreds of years of history .Thousands of buildings of Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty stand by the lakes and 36 stone bridges retain the ancient style. Historical traces are everywhere. The Grand-view Garden and Qushuiyuan Garden are in Zhujiajiao Old Town.
According to historic records, the town was formed during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, named Zhu Jia Village. Due to the convenient river transportations across the town, it grew prosperous and had thousands of households. Till Wanli Year in the Ming Dynasty, it was officially set as a town named Zhu Jie Ge, also named Zhu Xi. Zhu Li Record( an ancient book) compiled in Jiaqing Year of Qing Dynasty refered to it Zhu Li, or Jiao Li locally. With its unique natural environment and convenient river transportation, Zhu Jia Jiao attracted a flood of merchants.
It was once reputed as "world of clothes" for its booming textile industry. In the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, Zhu Jia Jiao had won itself an important position in rice market because of the large amount of rice exchanged here daily.,. At that time, "the streets were filled with thousands of stores" which sold various good from northern southern parts of China..
Walking on the zigzag stone pathway and the winding long lanes, you would assume you had stepped back to history.
