Zapata’s is one of the main drinking venues for thirsty ex-pats in Shanghai. It is basically a Mexican restaurant, serving burritos and paella, but it really comes to life when the night comes and the club opens. Then the whole place erupts with dancing on the tables, and it usually keeps boiling until the small hours. In the summer it also has a large – and often crowded – outdoor bier garten, where the guests from Zapata’s are often ushered away if they happen to take their drinks into the more sophisticated garden of Sasha’s, which is just next door.
