From an architectural perspective 1933 stands as a unique and stunning structure left to us from the 1930’s and forms a critical part of Shanghai’s historic preservation legacy. Completed in 1933, the building was commissioned by the then Shanghai Municipal Council, who invited a noted English architect to design the building. The result was a masterpiece which fulfilled its practical mission as an abattoir, yet also incorporated decorative elements which gives the building its unique look and feel that we are privileged to admire and enjoy from today’s perspective.
Amongst the outstanding features of the structure are its girderless structure, “flowering” columns, “cattle path”, and of course the various bridges which link the square perimeter with the circular center.
