Datong Attractions

Edition HistoryEdit Datong Attraction Features

The scenery of Datong differs markedly from the delicate and pretty cities. The Yungang Grottoes, with their 252 caves and 51,000 statues, represent the outstanding achievement of Buddhist cave art in China in the 5th and 6th centuries. Within the city itself, there are a few surviving sites of historical interest such as the Nine Dragon Screen, the Huayan Monastery, and the Shanhua Monastery. Hanging Temple is a temple built into a cliff near Mount Heng. Most of the historical sites in this region date to the Tang and Ming dynasties, but the Hanging Temple dates to the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534).
