Pinghu Tune, Shaoxing

Also named Yuejun Nanci, Pinghu Tune is a kind of literature of singing and talking performed by person coming from rich or normal families of Shaoxing in old times for self-amusement. No matter how many people taking part in the performance, there is only one who plays Sanxuan (three-stringed Chinese guitar played with a plectrum) singing and talking, others accompanying him with instruments. At the beginning, there will always be Jieshi followed by Huishu. Without gesture, movement, meaningful glance and expression, the only singer holds a Sanxuan to present numerous people and complicated events of the big world. Completely depending on his skill of singing and talking, he narrates events, expresses emotion and describes scenes, creating lifelike characters in the books and describing sentimental and exiting dramatic scenes, which make the audience close their eyes, forget anxiety and calm down, feeling as if they were in the scene of the book. Even suddenly realizing the truth, they will find it is still the eyes-closed old man when rising and watching the singer.
