Shegu Mound

Last updated by chinatravel at 2014/5/7

In the ancient times, this place was a large swamp. So it is called Daze Village (literally means Big Swamp Village). The first peasant revolt in China, Daze Village Uprising started here.

In 209 BC, Chen Sheng, Wu Guang, together with other 900 poor peasants were recruited to the border of Yuyang to serve as border patrol. On the way there, at Daze, due to heavy rain, the roads were damaged and their trip to the destination was delayed. According to Qin penal code, those in military service would be executed if they failed to keep their appointments on time. Chen claimed that "If we escape, we will die after we are arrested. If we carry a revolting, we will also die. We will die anyway. It is better to die for recovering State Chu. Is that right? "  After that, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang Killed official head and lead other peasants to revolt. They swore the oath of alliance and stated the uprising to revolt against cruel Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Since Chen Sheng styled his name She, people call this mound where he swore the oath of alliance "Shegu Mound".

Shegu Mound looks like a bottom-up funnel. The northern part is 4.6 meters high and the southern part is 3.2 meters. It is 67.6 meters long from east to west and 65.5 meters from north to south. The total area of the mound is 4,427.8 square kilometers. It has a very nice environment. Green trees set off one another around the mound. There are several old cypresses on the mound. A twenty-meter-deep old well named "Longyan Well"  (Dragon Eye Well), which was ruin of a temple, remains in the east of the mound. There are four inscriptions on the mound, respectively made in Wanli Era of the Ming Dynasty, Daoguang Era of the Qing Dynasty, Guangxu Era of the Qing Dynasty and 29th year of Republic of China. As recorded in the inscription, there was a Loutai Temple on this mound before the Ming Dynasty. There is an old dried tree on the south edge of the mound. The tree is in a dragon's shape and the stem looks like covering with scute. So it is called Zhelong Tree (Dragon-like three-bristle cudrania).

On the middle axis of the southern mound stands a large relief sculpture statute of Chen Sheng and Wu Guang Uprising. The statue is 9 meters tall, 6.2 meters wide, 1.7 meters thick and weighs 120 ton. The figure of the statue looks like a torch, symbolizing Chen Sheng and Wu Guang lighted the raging fire of the first peasant uprising. The Statue of Chen Sheng holds a sword in the left hand and raises his left arm to command uprising army. The statute of Wu Guang stares in front and holds a stick to charge forward. This statue won Copper Prize in the 1984 National City Statue Competition.

According to the storied recorded in Shi Ji – Chen She Shijia (i.e. Records of the Grand Scribe, Shijia is Biography of the Feudal Houses and Eminent Persons), many scenic spots are built around the mound, such as Place of Roaring Fox near Campfire, Red Book in the Fish's Stomach, Seventy Two Camps. On the southeast of the mound, Memorial of Chen Sheng and Wu Guang Uprising, namely Hong Hu Yuan (Swam Garden), was built. It is an archaize building of a total area of 2,474 square kilometers. There is an inscription corridor and cultural relic exhibition here. There are more than ten inscriptions written by renowned persons, and nearly 500 painting and calligraphy gifted by national famous painters and calligraphers are displayed here.
