Huangyaguan Great Wall Marathon has been successfully held for 5 sessions since 1999 in Ji County of Tianjin City with an increasing number of participating countries and participants and has become much more famous since then. It is usually held in late May on the picturesque Huangyaguan Great Wall every year, combing marathon sports, the brilliant culture of the Great Green Wall and the unique natural scenery and providing the participants an opportunity to take exercise as well as the appreciation of culture and scenery. In the year 2002, it attracted over one thousand participants from more than 30 countries and areas, including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Denmark, Germany, Britain, Norway, the United States and Iceland.

Huangyaguan Great Wall, as the World Cultural Heritage and the national 4A level scenic spot, is acknowledged to be the best place to host marathon race. Huangya with the meaning of “yellow cliff” began to be built in Tianbao 7th of Beiqi (557 A D) and had been renovated for times, the first time in the Ming Dynasty and the second time in 1985. Huangyaguan was designated as a key heritage conservation unit of Tianjin City. The route of the Huangyaguan Great Wall, designated as a standard international marathon route by the International Track and Field Association, is 42.5 kilometers long.

The 11th Huangyaguan Great Wall Marathon

The 11th Huangyaguan Great Wall Marathon was held on May 15th, 2010, attracting 1500 participants from over 40 countries. There are various marathon courses in this marathon, including full marathon, half marathon, 10 Kilometers Marathon and 5 Kilometers Marathon, in which the full marathon has been designated as the marathon course international standard by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The participants enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Great Wall, the golden valley, the green fields and the peaceful villages as well as the unique culture and customers in North China during the race, helping them relax.
